Transforming Responses to Economic Abuse among Immigrant Refugee

We recognize the unique challenges faced by immigrants, newcomers and refugee victims of Economic Abuse, and we are dedicated to breaking down barriers that impede their access to essential economic resources for healing and thriving.

In our 2021 research study in the Greater Ottawa region, 30% of victims had their government support seized by abusers, further exacerbating their vulnerability. Women from marginalized groups, including newcomers, refugees, and racialized women, face an elevated risk due to systemic factors such as limited access to social services, economic dependence on sponsors, language barriers, fear of deportation, and a lack of awareness about available services. Refugee victims encounter specific barriers that hinder their economic well-being, ranging from a lack of information on financial and economic legal rights to isolation and language barriers.

Our Commitment

We believe it is imperative to address these systemic challenges. Our commitment is to create a more inclusive and supportive environment through targeted interventions and services that cater to the unique needs of refugee victims of Economic Abuse. By doing so, we aim to ensure their access to vital resources and pave the way towards healing and empowerment.

Our key initiatives include

  1. Economic empowerment workshops with immigrant and refugee communities on Economic Abuse Screening Tool
  2. Resource and tools development for service providers
  3. Cultural Competency awareness raising in recognizing and addressing economic abuse within diverse cultural contexts
  4. Financial empowerment and literacy
  5. Referral services (credit repairing, mental health, economic empowerment)
