Empowering Lives, Breaking Chains- Global Economic Abuse Initiative to ward United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
We firmly believe in the transformative power of collaboration to drive positive change on a global scale. Our Global Economic Abuse Initiative is a united effort dedicated to addressing and combatting economic abuse at an international level.
Here are ways economic abuse relates to specific SDGs:
SDG 1: No Poverty: Economic abuse can contribute to poverty by restricting individuals’ access to financial resources and impeding their economic empowerment.
SDG 5: Gender Equality: Economic abuse is often associated with gender-based violence and can be a barrier to achieving gender equality by limiting women’s financial independence and economic opportunities.
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth: Economic abuse may hinder individuals from accessing decent work and participating in economic activities freely, affecting overall economic growth.
SDG 10: Reduced Inequality: Economic abuse can exacerbate existing inequalities by disproportionately impacting vulnerable groups and hindering their ability to access resources and opportunities.
SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions: Economic abuse can be considered a form of domestic violence, affecting individuals’ well-being and, in turn, the stability and justice within a society.
About the Collaborative Initiative:
Economic Abuse Awareness Day originated in Canada in 2019, initiated by the Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment (CCFWE) to draw attention to the urgent need for greater recognition of economic abuse. In 2021, the campaign expanded its reach, welcoming Australia into the fold. Joining forces with CCFWE were partners Surviving Economic Abuse from the UK and Good Shepherd from New Zealand. Together, these organizations united to mobilize resources both nationally and internationally in acknowledgment of the pervasive issue of Economic Abuse.

Our commitment to sustainable development extends to active policy advocacy aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). We recognize the vital role policy plays in driving positive change on a global scale, and our advocacy efforts are strategically directed toward advancing the specific SDG Goal.
This year, in collaboration with global partners, the Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment submitted recommendations to the United Nation Commission on the Status of Women. As a global coalition that works together to raise awareness and fight Economic Abuse nationally and internationally, we are writing to propose a comprehensive plan to address the pressing issue of Economic Abuse or Economic Harm globally.
