We are excited to share with you the graphic recordings of the 2022 Domestic Economic Abuse Summit! This event was organized to raise awareness about the issue of economic abuse and how we can work together to develop solutions. We believe that hearing the voices of those present at the summit will provide valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities that exist. Through the graphics, we hope to share the inspiring discussions, innovative suggestions, and passionate commitment to ending economic abuse. We hope you find the recordings useful as we work together to break the cycle of abuse and create a better future for all.

CCFWE 2022 Economic Abuse Summit: Kickoff

The Summit Kickoff saw Chancellor Claudette Commanda, Algonquin Anishinabe of the Kitigan Zibi Anichinabeg First Nation, and Celina Caesar-Chavannes, former MP, advocate, and current Keynote Speaker, create a sacred, blessed, person-driven space around the Summit to do the work. The keynote focus was on understanding that “the system is working as it was designed to” and on learning how to use disruption to make system change.

CCFWE 2022 Economic Abuse Summit: Panel Introduction to the Context of Economic Abuse

This panel brought together perspectives and people from research, law, shelters and service providers who have either worked with victims and survivors of Economic Abuse or worked in the overlapping area of domestic violence. The panel outlined several key intersecting and systemic factors, gaps, and solutions, as well as recommendations for the future.

CCFWE 2022 Economic Abuse Summit: Fireside Chat

This safe space moderated by Svetlana Mamaeva, former Ms. World Canada, current financial literacy coach, and social influencer, saw people from across the Summit and the community engage in victim and survivor stories. Discussion included lived experiences ranging from barriers around ending Economic Abuse to the wide-ranging impacts, to supporting one another in the group.

CCFWE 2022 Economic Abuse Summit: Canada Research Panel

The Director of the Canada Revenue Agency moderated this national discussion with Canadian organizations involved in data collection. Findings showed that major areas of concern are post-pandemic realities which made many other experiences worse such as: lack of safe, accessible, affordable housing, stereotyping and discrimination, barriers to accessing services, and lack of education around identifying and addressing Economic Abuse.

CCFWE 2022 Economic Abuse Summit: Responding to Financial Needs of Economic Abuse Victims and Survivors Panel

This panel brought together experts, coaches, non-profits, and lived experience from the financial sector to discuss what financial organizations are doing to address Economic Abuse. This interdisciplinary discussion touched on neurobiology of scarcity, trauma informed approaches, role of advocates in finance, survivor-informed services, policy development, and impacts on gender-diverse and racialized communities.

CCFWE 2022 Economic Abuse Summit: International Research Panel

Six leading organizations in the area of Economic Abuse research and advocacy announced their collaboration on the results of the Global Report and provided global insight to the status of this world-wide social injustice. The six organizations were Centre for Women’s Economic Safety (Australia), Surviving Economic Abuse (UK), Good Shepherd (New Zealand), Child Maintenance Difficulties (South Africa), Women’s Spirit (Israel), and CCFWE (Canada).

CCFWE 2022 Economic Abuse Summit: Closing Keynote

These closing remarks were delivered by Member of Parliament (MP) for Ottawa West, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development, Anita Vandenbeld, who summarized this work as follows: “This summit was a work of passion. Until CCFWE began its work, Economic Abuse was a hidden issue (in Canada). Many victim-survivors would not have realized that they suffered from a form of abuse. CCFWE has put this issue on the national agenda.”
