November is Woman Abuse Prevention Month + Financial Literacy Month, so it’s time to advocate for system change to end Economic Abuse.

There is no system change without funding and research so we’re calling on Canadian Governments to fund system change research around Economic Abuse.

We need to take Urgent Action on Economic Abuse against Women and Children through System Change.

CCFWE knows that policy and systems advocacy is essential in addressing and preventing domestic violence and intersecting issues.

1.Why the campaign?
Economic Abuse is a seldom-talked-about yet prevalent issue faced by survivors of domestic violence in Canada. It’s experienced by more than 96% of women who experience intimate partner violence. Economic Abuse can have a profoundly devastating effect on women: it impacts mental health and impedes a woman’s ability to leave an abuser, subsequently prolonging the amount of time she is vulnerable to harm.

And studies have shown that 1 in 4 women experience financial abuse even after they’ve left an abuser.

Knowing what Economic Abuse is and how it intersects with lived realities, mental attitudes and systemic structural barriers can help prevent it. We want to provide people with information to inform awareness and advocacy that is needed to convince stakeholders to fund research around system change.

2.Call to Action
Asking your mayor to take action on improving funding for system change research to end Economic Abuse against women and children is as easy as sending an email. Your voice is important in creating change and improving the Government’s policies and responses to violence against women and children. Please see below for this and other ways to get involved.
