November 26th is Economic Abuse Awareness Day (EAAD). This year’s Economic Abuse Awareness Day theme is “Counting the Cost.” The theme has been selected to raise awareness of the long-lasting and compounding costs of Economic Abuse on survivors and was chosen by the six organizing countries: Canada, England, Israel, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia.
Economic Abuse Awareness Day began in Canada in 2019 when the Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment (CCFWE) called for greater recognition of the issue. In 2021, Australia joined the campaign along with CCFWE, Surviving Economic Abuse (UK), and Good Shepherd (NZ) to mobilize resources nationally and internationally in recognition of Economic Abuse.
Every year, we have dedicated ourselves to advocating for the recognition of November 26 as Economic Abuse Awareness Day in over 100 cities, 10 provinces, and 3 territories. It is fulfilling to see that this day has gained recognition not only in Canada but also in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel. We are profoundly grateful for the support we have received from local and provincial governments in response to our call for action.
This year, in collaboration with global partners, the Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment submitted recommendations to the United Nation Commission on the Status of Women. As a global coalition that works together to raise awareness and fight Economic Abuse nationally and internationally, we are writing to propose a comprehensive plan to address the pressing issue of Economic Abuse or Economic Harm globally. The statement has been submitted on behalf of the International Coalition Against Economic Abuse under the sixty-eight Commission on the Status of Women. Read our submission
Economic Abuse remains a pervasive and deeply entrenched problem that affects individuals across all demographics, infringing upon their fundamental human rights, dignity, and well-being.
The National Economic Abuse Awareness Day presents an opportunity for a collective effort, bringing together victims, survivors, advocates, financial institutions, law enforcement, supporters, and political leaders in our shared mission to eradicate domestic Economic Abuse. We acknowledge the influence that each of us holds in creating a positive impact on someone.
For the past four years, 100 + Canadian major cities from coast to coast have proclaimed November 26th as Economic Abuse Awareness Day.
