In today’s rapidly evolving digital age, technology has become an integral part of our lives. However, its impact isn’t always positive, particularly when it comes to gender-based violence (GBV) and economic abuse. While technology can serve as a tool for empowerment and connection, it can also be weaponized to control, monitor, and exploit individuals, especially women who are already vulnerable to various forms of abuse.

Technology as a Tool for Perpetrators

Technology-facilitated abuse, including economic abuse, has become alarmingly common. Perpetrators use digital tools to track victims’ financial activities, manipulate bank accounts, and restrict access to resources. Examples include surveillance apps, spyware on smartphones, social media monitoring, and unauthorized access to online bank accounts. This digital exploitation often operates in tandem with other forms of gender-based violence, creating even more significant barriers for survivors to seek help, gain financial independence, and rebuild their lives.

A disturbing reality is that survivors may not always recognize that they are being controlled through digital means. As technology advances, so too do the methods abusers use. Smart home devices, like voice-activated speakers and surveillance cameras, can be used to track a victim’s movements or eavesdrop on conversations. The introduction of digital financial services also presents new avenues for abuse, such as coerced loans, unauthorized transactions, or controlling access to financial assistance.

Empowering Survivors with Technology

While technology can be misused, it also offers incredible potential to help survivors reclaim control and rebuild their financial independence. Digital tools, when used properly, can empower individuals to protect themselves from further harm and access critical resources.

  1. Digital Literacy and Security Tools: Survivors can benefit from learning how to secure their digital lives. Simple steps, like setting strong passwords, using two-factor authentication, and understanding privacy settings, can help protect sensitive information. Awareness of spyware,  tracking apps, and other digital threats is crucial. Many organizations offer workshops on digital safety, empowering survivors to regain control of their online presence.
  2. Safe Communication Channels: Encrypted messaging apps, such as Signal or Telegram, provide secure communication platforms that prevent abusers from intercepting messages. Additionally,  specialized services like MyPlan provide personalized safety planning and advice for survivors of intimate partner violence, including how to protect their finances and personal information.
  3. Financial Tools for Independence: Many financial institutions now offer apps that allow users to set up alerts for any suspicious transactions or changes in their accounts. Services like credit monitoring and financial counseling can also help survivors understand their credit history,  resolve issues stemming from financial abuse, and access financial resources.

Holding Tech Companies Accountable

Tech companies have a responsibility to protect their users, particularly those who are at risk of abuse.  Unfortunately, many tech platforms still lack adequate safeguards for users who may be experiencing digital abuse. There is a pressing need for the tech industry to implement stronger safety measures,  including:

  • User-Friendly Reporting Mechanisms: Tech companies should offer easy-to-access and effective reporting tools for survivors to flag abuse, whether it’s financial fraud, stalking, or harassment.  This includes providing resources and support for those who report abuse, ensuring they are not left to navigate the situation alone.
  • Stronger Data Privacy Protections: Personal information shared on tech platforms must be better safeguarded. Companies should prioritize privacy and ensure that users’ data is not vulnerable to exploitation, especially in the hands of abusive partners. This includes enforcing stricter security measures on accounts that handle financial transactions and private communications.
  • Collaborating with Advocacy Groups: Tech companies should work closely with organizations that support survivors of GBV and economic abuse. By partnering with experts, tech companies can better understand the unique challenges faced by vulnerable groups and create safer digital environments for all users.

The Future of Technology in Combating GBV and Economic Abuse

As digital tools continue to evolve, the fight against gender-based violence and economic abuse must keep pace. Technology should be harnessed to amplify survivors’ voices, provide them with the tools they need to protect themselves, and give them the resources to rebuild their lives. At the same time,  tech companies must be held accountable for creating safe spaces where all users can thrive without fear of exploitation.

The digital age should be one of empowerment, not exploitation. By combining the power of technology with thoughtful regulation, advocacy, and education, we can create a future where technology serves to protect, rather than harm, those who are most vulnerable.

Take Action

If you or someone you know is experiencing technology-facilitated abuse, consider reaching out to a local support organization. Many resources are available to help you safely navigate the digital landscape and regain control of your life. We must continue to advocate for stronger safeguards within tech platforms and ensure that survivors of GBV and economic abuse have the tools they need to thrive.

Let us use technology to create a safer, more inclusive world for everyone.
