Advancing Economic Security and Gender Equity
in Canada’s Tourism Sector
A new report from the Canadian Center for Women's Empowerment on the barriers women face in Canada's tourism industry and what employers, policymakers, and support organizations can do about it.
Women are a driving force in Canada’s tourism industry, yet many continue to face barriers to economic security, career advancement, and leadership opportunities. CCFWE’s new report examines the experiences of women in the sector, with a particular focus on those experiencing economic abuse and gender-based violence (GBV).
The report identifies two key opportunities to strengthen the sector:
Making tourism more welcoming. Practical ways employers and the sector can better support women, including those experiencing economic abuse and GBV, through workplace policies, training, and culture change.
Informing policy change. Federal recommendations that embed economic security and gender equity into Canada’s broader tourism strategy.
Together, these recommendations aim to build a more inclusive, resilient, and equitable tourism workforce that benefits workers, employers, and the Canadian economy.
