Social Worker – Financial Empowerment  Program 

Location: This is a remote position in Ontario; however, candidates must be residents of Ottawa for occasional in-person meetings.

About Us: The Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment is based in Ottawa, and the only Canadian non-profit dedicated to addressing all forms of Economic Abuse and economic injustice. CCFWE combats systemic barriers faced by women experiencing Economic Abuse survivors through education, community based research, economic and financial empowerment, policy influencing and system change. Our work applies an equity-lens to policy, and is informed by evidence and lived experience of victim-survivors. Our work focuses on Economic Abuse prevention and response through meaningful community engagement. We bring violence and trauma -informed practices to inform policy systems, enabling victims, survivors, and their families to achieve economic empowerment.


Project Overview:
 This project aims to provide trauma- and violence-informed financial empowerment support to survivors of  domestic abuse in Ontario through workshop, referrals and support. 


Primary Job Responsibilities: 

The Social Worker will provide direct support to victims of abuse and violence, offering counseling, emotional support, and connecting them with essential community resources. This role includes developing educational materials, advocating for victims’ needs, and ensuring they have access to services that promote healing and empowerment.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the barriers faced by marginalized groups, including visible minorities, newcomers, refugees, and racialized women, and the challenges they encounter in employment, housing, healthcare, and education. Experience in program development, collaboration with community stakeholders, and knowledge of domestic abuse and social services in Canada are essential.

 Program Director


Client Advocacy and Support: 

 

    • Conduct client assessments and make referrals to essential domestic abuse and financial services.

    • Assist clients in accessing financial resources such as emergency funds, public assistance programs, and legal aid.

    • Stay informed about best practices in financial literacy and abuse support.

    • Collaborate with legal advocates, counselors, and community organizations to provide comprehensive support. 

    • Oversee one-on-one coaching to help survivors set and achieve their economic goals with financial advisors.



Project Management:

 

    • Oversee the development of resources for victims and financial institutions to guide their interactions with economic abuse survivors and ensure their needs are met.

    • Ensure compliance with funders’ requirements and use assessment tools to measure project success.

    • Ensure capturing, reviewing, and analyzing project delivery based on survivor needs.

    • Support the CCFWE team in developing educational materials to raise awareness about economic abuse across the program.

    • Prepare project updates, reports, promising practices, success stories, and lessons learned, and present them to supervisors and others as requested.

    • Attend community events and workshops to stay informed about available resources and emerging issues related to economic abuse and financial empowerment

    • Design, implement, and evaluate programs aimed at supporting survivors in their recovery and growth using a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive approach.

    • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify gaps in services and develop innovative solutions.


Resources coordination and referral

 

    • Connect clients with community resources, financial institutions, and services (e.g., credit counseling, housing support) that align with their financial goals and recovery plans. 

    • Create educational materials, workshops, and presentations to raise awareness of victim services, rights, and preventative measures.

    • Develop resources to help victims navigate the justice system, access financial aid, and build resilience.

    • Engage in community outreach efforts to distribute educational resources and information about support services.

    • Ensure project resources are accessible online through CCFWE’s platforms.

    • Organize financial literacy training, panels, and webinars for women victims of domestic economic abuse.

    • Collaborate with local women’s services, shelters, and banks to inform and guide program development, emphasizing the inclusion of women from marginalized backgrounds.

    • Represent CCFWE at stakeholder events and within communities.

    • Advocate for policies and practices that support survivor empowerment and well-being with the CCFWE Taskforce.

    • Stay updated on best practices and emerging trends in survivor support and economic empowerment.


Project Communication:

 

    • Work with the CCFWE team to ensure project information, stories and materials are accessible through CCFWE’s website, email lists, newsletters, media, and social media feeds.


Qualifications:

 

    • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, or a related field or equivalent experience.

    • Minimum of 4-6 years of experience in social work working with vulnerable populations, victim support services, with a focus on trauma-informed care.

    • Strong understanding of the social services system, community resources, and victim rights.

    • Ability to develop educational content and conduct community outreach.

    • Excellent communication, advocacy, and counseling skills.

    • Familiarity with legal processes and community referral networks for victims of violence.

    • Current Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check
